Derbyshire based, embroidery Artist Samantha Trevis runs her own business creating bespoke embroidered furniture accessories. A keen follower of the Hand & Lock Prize she read the 2019 brief, titled ‘Fool the Senses’ and decided to enter. Using recycled beads, crystals, sequins and fabrics Trevis recreated the vast Andromeda galaxy spinning energetically out of it’s silver frame.
Trevis used light reflecting materials to build the dynamic sparkle of the swirling mass of stars. Just as the universe is full of dazzling light and terrifying darkness, Trevis described the circumstances from which her art was made; ‘I am losing Mum, my treasure-hunting sidekick to Alzheimers. Her world darkens, yet she remains so cheerful; positively radiating love and happiness’.
It’s clear beautiful things emerge from times of adversity as Trevis has demonstrated. Her stunning work was awarded the 2nd place prize in the open Textile art category.
