Hand & Lock celebrated 250 years of embroidery with a series of special conferences, workshops an exhibitions, a gala dinner and charity auction.
The conference consisted of talks from international expert speakers. Business leaders, fashion historians, trend predictors, artists and designers discussed the lessons of the past, challenges of the present and opportunities for the future. Titled: ‘Heritage, the Now and the Future of Embroidery’ the speakers explored the enduring appeal of embroidery in fashion and textile arts.
The exhibition was curated with the help of University of the Arts London and the Textile Research Centre which highlighted Hand & Lock’s role at the forefront of fashion and military embroidery for the last 250 years, each exhibit showcased drafts, samples and historical ledgers from our private archives making the event a rare and exciting opportunity to see some of the finest embroideries in the world.
Demonstrating that embroidery is not just rooted in the past but thriving in the present, the exhibition included a special display of the uniquely commissioned one-of-a-kind designer handbags from the ‘The Embellished Handbag’.
In keeping with Hand & Lock’s commitment to education we also be taught Tambour Beading classes in London, Sydney and Chicago. This haute couture embroidery skill is prized in the world of high fashion as the most effective way to embellish garments with speed and precision. Using a special tambour hook, students were taught how to master the tool, the technique and the various materials and stitches that combine to make stunning beaded gowns.
