Reclamation

My concept was born from the abundance of waste materials we have around us. I believe that if we can begin to look at our problems differently, we can find new solutions that produce beautiful results. Mother Nature is constantly working to break down and purify what can be put to better use. My hope is that we will do the same in the fashion industry and work in union with Nature instead of against Her.

Other than the machine sewing of the garment sections, I used only the hand techniques of spinning. lace weaving, hand stitching, and embroidery. I allowed the fabric to sit in the sun and enjoy some natural discoloration. I looked to the waste that I have in my own studio and allowed my creativity to find a new purpose for it. The real surprise was just how many ideas flowed one to the next.

This bobbin lace gown with hand-cut embellishments and embroidered detail was inspired by the enduring power of Nature which is constantly seeking new ways of reinvention and rebirth.

Materials used: Shopping bags, plastic bottles, silk scraps, garment bags
