A room full of embroidery enthusiasts welcomed the Hand & Lock team and prepared for five days of embroidery lessons in Goldwork and Tambour Beading. Students attending the Williamsburg Goldwork workshop learned the art of embroidery using metal threads. Students learned Soft string padding, Felt padding, Pearl Purl, Cut work in Smooth and rough bullion, Chips, passing and Essing and much more. Goldwork is the art of embroidery using metal threads. It is particularly prized for the way light plays on it. The term ‘goldwork’ is used even when the threads are imitation gold, silver, or copper, or coloured allowing for an array of textures and colours to express your vision in.
Students attending the Williammsburg Tambour Beading workshop learned the technique used in French Haute Couture where beads or sequins are attached to fabric. Using a hook and working through a fabric stretched tight as a drum, students learned how to create a design and how to work the hook through the fabric without catching before learning the technique. The technique is popular on International Catwalks and can be seen in shows by Elie Saab and Oscar De La Renta.
