Inspired by spring, the anticipation of summer and childhood memories spent in the sunshine, Hand & Lock’s latest collection of machine embroidered patches is dedicated to all the things that live in your garden. Forget-me-nots, mushrooms, peonies, wild moths and the sun beaming in the sky, all recall days spent in the garden getting dirt under your fingernails.
To recapture those dreamy days, Liss Cooke, Hand & Lock’s lead digital designer, looked at vintage botanical drawings and retro seed packaging. She studied some of the most popular flowers that bloom during each British spring and considered how each of these could be reimagined in threads. As the project developed, a 70s psychedelic influence began to emerge organically, and some patches took on the classic bumper sticker flower-power ethos of that era.
The final collection of 12 unique iron-on patches is a perfect way to upcycle and update a much-loved garment or accessory. In keeping with the theme of nature and retro idealism, Hand & Lock are always keen for consumers to think about using embroidery as a means of extending the life of existing pieces to save them from environmental waste or landfills. These new patches are ideal for any denim, any heavyweight cotton, even leather jackets, nylon bombers, trench coats and rucksacks.
“I think the practice of embroidery can be great for relaxation, but I also think it's important for people to get out and interact with nature and appreciate the natural world around them. Even get their hands dirty and feel the soil - these patches really capture that feeling”.
Each patch can be ironed on and supplemented with some sturdy stitches for some extra longevity.
Production Director Jessica Pile, normally a champion for embroidery as therapy, sees the new collection as yet another way people can take better care of their mental health.
The new collection doesn’t just emulate the natural world, it celebrates it and encourages consumers to get involved. Selected patches are sold with a specially designed packet of wildflower seeds. These seeds allow more people to beautify the spaces around them while also enjoying embroidery and the positive feeling that comes with granting a second life to cherished clothing.
The new collection and the accompanying seed packs strive to be great for bees, amazing for mental health and simply satisfying.
