Powerful wildfires are having a devastating impact on our climate, communities, and infra-structure. Forest fires release huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to the acceleration of global warming. Fire, climate change and our fragile nature are the motifs chosen for this project. Ablaze is an embroidery work combining both fashion and interior design. It juxtaposes organic
shapes representing trees with the shapes of flames consuming it. Although forest fire is a global issue, the design of the leaves is represented by two native trees from my home country, Brazil.
The artwork emphasizes the idea of change and adaptation. By avoiding the concept of ‘single-use’,
the piece can alter its use/purpose and adapt to a variety of occasions. All embroidery elements are wearable. The bonfire and the flames can be displayed as a sculpture. The leaves are also detachable, allowing custom configurations of the same garment. Goldwork, Crewelwork, Raisedwork, Beading were the embroidery techniques applied with the incorporation of Braiding technique. The garment is based on a unique pattern designed and digitally printed on silcott heavy satin specifically for this project. Ablaze evokes an emotional response in the viewer highlighting the importance of preserving our vulnerable ecosystems.
