CRITERIA: The Textile Institute London & South East England Section are looking for the best use of colour and embroidery threads, that are considered to be sustainable, in a final piece.
AWARD: The Textile Institute London & South East England Section will award £500 for the best use of sustainable colour and embroidery threads.
“Rachel Ellenbogen chose to explore using recycled materials recycled polyester chiffon as the base fabric and pleated details, and for the beads she used recycled plastic bottles to create beads and beads from second hand jewellery. By doing so she managed to integrate into her design scheme a complex ‘collage’ of intricate embroidery, using both traditional techniques and beads alongside re-purposed, almost jewel like, small coloured waves of plastic embellishing her scheme. Re-purposing plastic is an environmental necessity and Rachel has demonstrated how this product can become highly desirable within a design embroidery scheme. Rachel’s work examples the potential recycled plastic holds.”
