Emma Rodak heard about the the Hand & Lock Prize from her tutors while studying Textiles at Art University Bournemouth. Her interest in the Prize led to a two month work placement at the Hand & Lock studio where she developed new embroidery skills that she then applied to her submission.
Rodak submitted a stunning sculptural embroidery inspired by ‘deforestation’. Asked about her use of materials she explained that she had used ‘unusual surface textures to fool the senses through un-conventional materials, such as copper mesh, copper wires, recycled textural leatherette and organic, eco-friendly fabrics’.
Her embroidery submission evokes the texture and colours of tree bark with it’s mossy surface, scars and weathered surface. Organic yet metallic, Rodak demonstrated her close understanding of the brief and walked away with a well deserved third place in the Textile art Category.
