Faye Arguelles is a Filipina-British, embroidery designer who recently graduated from the London College of Fashion. Her embroidery and design work explores the beauty and complexity of the natural world and the impact of humans. The work pictured here marks her first ever entry into the Hand & Lock Prize for embroidery.
Arguelles entered the 2019 Hand & Lock Prize with a heavily embroidered and embellished dress.
Inspired by the photographs of environmental pollution and earth damage by J Henry Fair, her entry explored the perception of beauty found in the toxic and scarred surfaces of an environmentally impacted planet earth. Using natural fibres such as, abaca (banana fibres) piñasilk, cotton, silk along with synthetics such as silk mixed fabric and polyester organza her work examines natural processes versus the man-made.
Featuring a combination of embroidery techniques including an innovative use of red goldwork bullions, Arguelles has combined technical expertise with exceptional vision and design. Her impressive talent was recognised by the Prize judging panel and she was awarded first place in the Fashion Student Category.
