"After a career change I’m now back making & exhibiting 3D one-off pieces, many on the themes of transformation, costume and, recently, portraiture."
Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead. The art of Alchemy, a portrait of my grandfather Joseph H. Harrimanman. “Sub-Rosa” was the process of turning base metal into gold, the colour red being synonymous with gold. Embroidery design inspired by renaissance fabrics, incorporating alchemical symbols, roses and poetic quotations.
Life-sized bust mounted on mannequin, portrait in petit point, mantle in red silk-satin with embroidery of coloured & metallic threads, appliqué, padded border & passementerie buttons. Cap with petit point border, petit point ruff, padded , beaded & embroidered silk horns embellished with tokens, metal escutcheon & jewelled cross.
I’m an 80’s graduate of the Manchester BA Embroidery course. After a career change I’m now back making & exhibiting 3D one-off pieces, many on the themes of transformation, costume and, recently, portraiture. It’s absolutely what I live for.
