“Poetics rising from the cages of Bauhaus” is inspired by the primary colours and strict geometric shapes of the Bauhaus movement. Bauhaus had no place for poetics, possessing clear geometric shapes and lines which stressed functionality over feelings. Despite this, there is romanticism in Bauhaus that I wanted to bring out.
My experiments are all about eliminating strict geometry by choosing proper colours and embroidery textures whilst maintaining the artistic value of the work. I wanted to show how both painting and embroidery could be used organically in an artwork.
To enhance the feeling of liberation, I chose a dark canvas base, with the work’s romanticism breaking through the intense yellow, floral texture and ostrich feathers fluttering delicately. In this piece, I followed the rule of thirds, with raised embroidery taking centre stage. I avoided overloading my artwork, conscious of the thin line between true art and kitsch. I experimented painting French wire and sequins with acrylic paint, which performs harmoniously in artworks. The raised embroidery catches audience attention and impresses from multiple angles.
The idea of this project is to show how the careful combination of textures and colours can soften sharp geometric shapes and uncover more romantic elements. That is what a true poetics of colour is.
