"My aim was to create a piece that both commemorated the sacrifice so many made, while also celebrating the ‘Miracle of Deliverance’ that Dunkirk is seen as being."

My most recent project was inspired by my family connections to the Evacuation at Dunkirk, and exploring the ways that the significance and poignancy from this event could be married with the strong and linear patterns that have become synonymous with my practice. My aim was to create a piece that both commemorated the sacrifice so many made, while also celebrating the ‘Miracle of Deliverance’ that Dunkirk is seen as being.

I has imagined and created the top half of a military uniform, consisting of a shirt layered underneath an authentic jacket, both covered in elaborate embroidery inspired by the colourful flags that adorn the rescue ships, a symbol of hope for so many. The jacket is covered in textural embroidery, including gold work and canvas work techniques, using a wide range of materials, and the shirt has flatter by detailed stitching, using techniques like black work and tambour.

I have entered the Hand & Lock prize because its the single competition that hand embroidery excellence is fully appreciated. Every year I have seen the entrances and been blown away by the skill level, and so wanted to opportunity to show I am on par with that level, and prove my skills. It also provides an opportunity to get my name more known, and provides me a springboard to start my career, especially in these very difficult times.
