"My collection was inspired by the plastic pollution in the ocean and I wanted to apply my own spin on embroidery"

Neo Ocean is inspired by corals and other organic – coral like – structures exploring the widely used, accessible plastics within the fashion industry. Neo Ocean links the issue of plastic pollution and sustainability with innovative materials, reducing waste, reusing old materials and recycling all waste products produced into a fashion concept for womenswear. Neo Ocean is a tactile, mixed media, fabric manipulation collection, creating samples made up of hand-made embellishments, laser cutting and hand dyeing materials for a diverse high-quality collection.

As a designer I find inspiration in my surroundings and wanted to create a collection that had meaning through a passion of sea life as I live and study in Bournemouth. My collection was inspired by the plastic pollution in the ocean and I wanted to apply my own spin on embroidery for the Hand and Lock Prize to show innovation and embroidery in a different light. This would allow my concept to show the importance of the oceans and the beauty it holds. I use mixed media and exploring different materials and techniques was important to develop in my final university collection.

Entering the Hand and Lock Prize meant that I could demonstrate a difference in fashion embellishment and wanted to develop a piece that would stand out to a wider audience.
