This project entitled An Immortal Bloom, is a collective of flowers in representative formations to scarring on peoples bodies. It is a floral explosion of colour which hopes to show the beauty within the individuality of something so natural. It is a celebration of individuality in an age led on social media and other medias which allows others to wear the scarring and experience the effects of it through being encased in the perspex box the embroidery is attached to. I wanted the piece to be both immersive and multi inspired and so the embroidery embodies multiple scar shaping’s as its base. The materials used for the project are a combination of the more usual and the unusual.
I have stitched with rayon for the silk shading but have coated the poppies and some other in latex as this links the piece to mould making for a prosthetic. I have also used metal mesh with a similar form to that used in surgeries. There is a use of coloured and silver Goldwork materials, as well as a use of Goldwork technique with plastic tubing. The edges if wired are stitched using Tambour techniques and Stumpwork.
I have followed the competition since college, through my university years and have finally decided I have pieces I would like to enter into it.
I have for the past three years been studying at the Royal School of Needlework furthering and perfecting my knowledge of embroidery techniques. It has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and I hope from here forth I can turn my passion into something which creates a love around it. I want to create works which create change among the ideals of the human form in society today and celebrate the little things and the beauty of them.
