‘The Apron’; is a piece of textile art routed in the value of craftsmanship and the slow-textiles philosophy, this piece strives to sustain and celebrate one craft practice through the medium of another. Inspired by her engagements with a South-London Butchers, ‘Chadwick’s’ where she and her sisters work, the craft of Butchery is intimately explored. The legacy of this local business, where humour is key to the community and shared culture of the staff, is sustained through the ensemble. Traditional ideas about British culture are
subverted to create a piece that is luxury yet comical, regal yet accessible and which reflects the designer’s own identity as a South Londoner. Through colour-led design work this piece tells a story of personal identity and relationship with two very disparate ancient crafts.
Embroidery techniques she employed included Goldwork, Hand-Stitching, Soutache, Beading, Layered cloth-cutwork, Quilting, Pattern-cutting, Relief-preparation, Hot-fixing, Fabric-manipulation, Laser-cut motifs and Up-cycled beer can embellishments.
The glistening nature of the meats informed material choices including the gloss leather and shiny metallic embellishments, other materials such as the velvet, silk satin, silk organza, glass organza, netting, suede and lace were chosen on the basis of their traditional luxury, feminine quality and texture.
