"I have followed the Hand and Lock Prize for a long time, and it would be a dream of mine to be part of it with so many talented designers and artists."
Brighton based, Sophie Reynolds entered this luxurious overcoat into the 2019 Hand & Lock Prize while completing her MA in Textile Design Innovation from Nottingham Trent University. Specialising in hand and digital embroidery, Reynolds combined these techniques for her debut entry into the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery.
The soft pink overcoat is layered with delicately coloured, appliqued laser cut shapes, fringing, beads, over-size sequins and more.
Evoking the idea of a coral reef it feels organic and demands to be touched.
Reynolds explains her entry was informed by an exploration of the senses, in particular touch, as a way of making connections to the environment and objects around us. Inspired by repetitive natural forms, Reynolds has created organic embroidery shapes, layering materials along with contemporary and traditional embroidery techniques.
The judging panel and public were impressed by her artistry, craft and design, awarding her the second place spot in the 2019 Hand & Lock Prize.
